Orbiter 1.2.6

OrbiterApps has issued a new maintenance update for users of its flagship product, Orbiter. The free Mac app is a Softpedia pick. Orbiter acts as a quick launcher for the files, folders and applications you use the most.

“This is a performance update only,” a small announcement on the OrbiterApps website reads. “Users will notice increased speed while dragging, adding, launching, and removing items,” the developer says. The change has been possible through code optimizations, according to OrbiterApps.

Minimum requirements for Orbiter haven’t changed. The software still runs beautifully on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, as well as on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Being the Universal Binary app that it is, Orbiter can be installed and run on any kind of Mac, whether it’s powered by an Intel processor, or the PowerPC architecture.

For those that are not familiar with the software, Orbiter comes in extremely handy to those who need to access many places on their Mac on a regular basis, but don't want too many icons in the dock. Orbiter's UI allows users to drag in anything from their most accessed directories and applications to a text file, a song or a picture, and access those items with a single (or double) click, without having to use complex Spotlight searches, or worse, use the Finder to locate those items and launch them.

As reported a while ago by Softpedia, Orbiter also sports a couple of “super powers” that make the software extremely user friendly, such as a “Vanish” feature that makes the app disappear when you don't need it, and “Active Screen” capabilities that let you assign one side of the screen to the program so that, when you touch it with the mouse pointer, Orbiter appears.
